There’s a version of this state that’s intentional…
and there’s a version of it that most people live in all day.
Same physiology.
Very different outcomes.
Because what you’re looking at here isn’t really about boxing.
It’s about activation.
It’s about what happens in the body when your system shifts into a stress response—
heart rate up
focus narrowed
energy mobilized
ready for action
In this context, it’s intentional.
It’s directed.
It has a clear beginning and a clear end.
But for most people…
this same state is running constantly.
And that’s where the problem begins.
Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been looking at stress from two different angles.
In Issue 014, we explored stress in macro—
how the world around you can trigger internal stress responses.
In Issue 015, we brought it closer to home with stress in micro—
the everyday moments that shouldn’t be a big deal…
but somehow are.
And if you missed those, it’s worth going back—because this all builds.
Because now we’re going one layer deeper.
Into something most people don’t think about clearly.
How stress shows up in your body.
Stress in the Body Isn’t Just Physical
When most people think about stress in the body,
they think about things like:
Not enough sleep
Working too much
Overtraining
Burnout
And yes—that’s part of it.
But that’s not the whole picture.
Because the body isn’t just responding to what you do to it.
It’s responding to how you live inside of it.
The Body Wasn’t Designed for Constant Stress
Your nervous system is designed to operate primarily from a calm, regulated state.
What’s called a parasympathetic state.
That’s where:
Your body recovers
Your hormones regulate
Your thinking is clear
Your energy is steady
That’s what this looks like.
Grounded.
Present.
At ease in your body.
But most people aren’t living there.
They’re living in the opposite.
A constant, low-level fight-or-flight response.
A sympathetic state.
And here’s the problem:
That state was never meant to be sustained.
It was designed for short bursts.
You’re in danger → you respond → you return to calm.
But today…
People are getting triggered into that state
over and over again…
And never fully coming out of it.
What That Actually Looks Like
It’s not just big events.
It’s everyday life.
Driving in traffic.
Getting cut off.
A comment from your partner.
Something not getting done around the house.
A work interaction that doesn’t land right.
And suddenly…
You’re activated.
Frustrated.
Irritated.
Tight.
Reactive.
And for most people…
This is happening hundreds of times a day.
To the point where it feels normal.
But it’s not.
It’s a nervous system that’s become hypersensitive.
Treating everyday moments…
like threats.
When Stress Becomes Your Baseline
Here’s where it gets tricky.
Most people don’t even realize they’re in a stress state.
Because they’ve normalized it.
They don’t know what it feels like
to actually be calm.
to be regulated.
to be at ease in their body.
And when that happens…
The body starts paying the price.
Hormones get out of balance
Cortisol stays elevated
Energy drops
Recovery slows
Thinking becomes less clear
Intuition becomes less accessible
Not because something is “wrong” with you.
But because the system is being run
in a way it wasn’t designed for.
There Are Actually Two Types of Physiological Stress
One of the most important distinctions to understand is this:
There’s internal stress…
and there’s external stress.
1. Internal Stress (What You Generate)
This is what we’ve been talking about in the past two issues.
The emotional loops.
The mental patterns.
The reactions to life.
This is what drives your nervous system into overactivation.
2. External Stress (What You Impose on the Body)
This is different.
This is what you’re doing to your body physically.
Not sleeping enough
Overworking
Overtraining
Constant stimulation
Not giving your body time to recover
And here’s the key:
These two interact.
If your body is physically exhausted…
It becomes much harder to regulate emotionally.
If you’re emotionally dysregulated…
It drains your body and creates fatigue.
Now you’re stuck in a loop.
Burning energy internally…
while demanding more externally.
And eventually…
The body says no.
Where Most People Miss It
Most people try to solve stress in one direction.
They either:
Try to “think better”
Or try to “rest more”
But they don’t look at the full system.
The real question is:
Am I asking more of my body and nervous system…
than they’re capable of sustaining right now?
What It Looks Like to Work With This
There are two sides to this work.
1. Internal Regulation
Learning how to:
Recognize when you’re activated
Center your nervous system
Shift out of reactivity
Return to a regulated state
This is the foundation.
2. External Alignment
Looking at your life and asking:
Am I getting enough sleep?
Am I overloading my schedule?
Am I constantly stimulated?
Am I giving my body time to recover?
And adjusting accordingly.
Because part of the work is managing yourself…
And part of the work is not creating unnecessary load on the system.
What Changes When You Get This Right
When your nervous system becomes more regulated…
Everything improves.
You have more energy
Your thinking becomes clearer
Your emotional responses stabilize
You feel better in your body
You perform better in your life
And most importantly…
You regain access to your intuition.
Because just like we talked about in the Intuition series…
None of that is available…
when your system is in a constant stress response.
Where This Leads
This is why stress matters.
Not just because of how it feels.
But because of what it blocks.
And it’s also why we do the work we do inside programs like:
The Power Series (training mind and emotion)
Reset (retraining your body and nervous system)
Because this isn’t something you “figure out” once.
It’s something you train.
And when you do…
Your body becomes an asset again.
Not something you’re fighting.
If you prefer to train in different formats,
you can watch on YouTube…
or listen on The Connection Fix Podcast.
Whatever works best for you—use that.
One Question to Sit With
Before I wrap, just notice this:
Where in your life right now…
are you asking more of your body…
than it’s actually able to give?
Is it:
Lack of sleep?
Constant stimulation?
Overwork?
Emotional overload?
And if you’re honest…
What would it look like to bring that back into alignment?
If you’re willing, send me an email and share what you notice.
Because that awareness alone…will make something new possible.
More soon.
Have a great rest of your day, and I’ll look forward to connecting again next week.
